The Creation Story
The Genesis creation account is vitally important to understanding the entire Bible. It lays the foundation for what is to follow. For example, we cannot understand the story of the fall of Adam & Eve; the tragic event of the worldwide flood; the salvation of mankind or even the book of Revelation without the first two chapters of Genesis.
Questions Are Answered
In addition, it answers questions like:
How did we get here? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Do we have a purpose?
So what can we learn from Genesis 1:1-2:25? It’s not my purpose here to compare Creation with Evolution, but simply to provide a brief outline of what the Bible teaches about our origins.
Six Days of Creation
The Bible account of our creation begins with a description of the events of six days in the distant past. No date for creation is provided, so although various theories have been provided, we cannot be certain.
Most scholars believe that Moses wrote the book of Genesis. However, it is not his goal to provide us with a scientific textbook, so those looking for scientific answers are going to find few here. Rather, it is the author’s goal to provide us with a glimpse of the creative powers of a God who is deeply invested in His creation.
The Chart below provides a breakdown of what took place on each day, and how we benefit from God’s creative powers.

A Pattern to the Master Plan
There is a definite, observable pattern to God’s master plan. In fact we see three laws present in the Genesis Creation Account.
They are:
Law of Particularization
-We move from the universe, to the earth, to man.
Law of Progression
-The climactic work is the creation of mankind.
Law of Centrality
-God is the principal person at work throughout
The pattern demonstrates that God is working to a very definite plan. His is not a haphazard creation.
None of this should surprise us. God is omnipotent and omniscient. However, He has an overwhelming love for mankind. The account of creation shows us that we have a place in His plans and His concern for our well-being is greater than we can imagine.
As the following chart shows, God’s creation week was very structured.

God Continues to Create
We must not make the mistake of thinking that God’s creating ended when He rested on the 7th day. God continues to create and will do so on into the future.
One of the reasons for this is that shortly after the Creation, mankind made poor choices and sinned against God with tragic consequences. Our world is no longer the paradise of Eden. We live in a decaying world, filled with sorrow, pain, death, war, pollution, and other effects resulting from the Fall of Man.
Nevertheless, God plans to create a new heaven and earth that will be a vast improvement on this one. In the book of Revelation we catch a glimpse of what is yet to come.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
Revelation 21:1-4
God plans to do away with this tired old world and create something vastly superior. He has even made a way for us sinful descendants of Adam & Eve to enter it. Once again, it involves His creative powers.
The New Creation In Us
The apostle Paul tells us that when we become followers of Jesus, a change takes place. We become a new creation!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” II Corinthians 5:17
Like the world which we live in, we need to be recreated. We must be cleansed and made new so that we can enter into the new creation that God will make. This becomes possible when we choose to put our faith in Jesus. When we took a step of faith and put our trust in Jesus for our salvation, we become a new creation. God sees us in a new light. We are no longer spiritually dead, we have become spiritually alive – a new creation!
